Fight Through Cartoons: My Story of Harassment, Intimidation and Jail (Marshall Cavendish
by Zunar

Saturday 29 June 2019

The Book
For the first time, Zunar tells of the harassment and intimidation he faced as Malaysia’s leading political cartoonist. Covering the period from 2009 to 2018, he details the banning of his books, the arrests, the office raids, the travel bans, the harassment of printers and bookshops, and the nine sedition charges he faced. Zunar also reveals the strategies he used to overcome these hardships through the use of laughter and humour. Fully illustrated with some of his most arresting cartoons.

The Author
Zunar is a political cartoonist who draws inspiration from a singular ethos: ‘How can I be neutral. Even my pen has a stand.’ His first cartoons appeared in the early 1970s for magazines such as Bambino, Kiah Cinta, Gila-Gila and Chili Padi. He shot to prominence during the Reformasi movement of the late 1990s which led to his first detention. Using biting satire and a recognisable cast of characters, Zunar has produced several cartoon books that deal explicitly with the ills of Malaysian politics and society. He remains one of the country’s most important and principled voices fighting corruption and the abuse of power.
