Suratman

Suratman compiles eleven short stories which were first published in newspapers and literary magazines between 1956 to 1988. To date, the central issues remain relevant – from parental neglect to cultural alienation, language deprivation and spiritual emptiness. This book is a testimony of Suratman’s acute sensitivity to his community and the predicaments of his people. His short stories illustrate lives of the ordinary through his fluid linguistic style and rich use of imagery.

Translated in English by various translators, prefaced by Dr Azhar Ibrahim (National University of Singapore) and, with an Introduction by Professor Dr Solehah Ishak (Universiti Teknologi Mara).
