The official Penang launch of Marco Ferrarese’s Banana Punk Rawk Trails (SIRD) was the centrepiece of a Nusantara Forum under the title ‘A Window on the Globalised Music Scene from Southeast Asia’. Both Marco and the guest speaker, Joe Kidd, focused on the meaning punk in the Malaysian and regional contexts. Very rooted in popular culture since 1982, yet completely estranged from mainstream narratives, it is a space that has offered many young Malaysians the chance to think and act outside the box – a tool of self-empowerment and self-expression.
