Bookish Musings

In American Gods, Neil Gaiman makes the following pithy declaration: “What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul”. This month’s bumper edition of Penang Monthly contains a feature essay on the bookshop by the novelist, scholar and renegade punk Marco Ferrarese, based on a long interview he conducted with Gareth. It offers the story of why the bookshop opened in the first place – in the face of a lot of common sense advice – and some reflections on what we think Gerakbudaya Bookshop means to the town called George.

The article is now uploaded and available on Penang Monthly’s website. Read it here: http://penangmonthly.com/the-bookman-who-embraced-penang/.
