To celebrate the publication of her latest collection of short essays – Dancing on Thin Ice (EDM, 2015) – this Nusantara Forum brings Marina Mahathir together in conversation with Zainah Anwar, who wrote the foreword to the new book. As always, Marina dissects many of the issues that assail Malaysia – money politics, weak leadership, gender inequality, racism, educational standards, and much more. As Zainah writes: ‘Marina fearlessly gives voice to those who are disempowered, marginalised and persecuted, and gives hell to those in power’. The particular focus of their conversation – appropriate since both speakers write a newspaper column – is the state of the mainstream media, characterised by the ever-present threat of censorship and personal threats, and the role of writing against oppression.
