Hikayat is Penang’s newest space for arts and letters, and houses Gerakbudaya Bookshop’s second store specialising in non-fiction titles. It also contains an events space, Hikayat Blue, open to anyone who wants to call it their base, and hosting film screenings, talks, reading groups, exhibitions, workshops and more. The Writers’ Suite is the home of a residency programme for people working on the last stretch to finish a book, a play, an album or anything creative. A podcast studio which will, in time, evolve into a high-quality podcast facility promoting literature, the arts and lifelong learning. And Cerita Cafe, serving delicious food and drink in a space that respects reading and conversations.

Founded by William Knox in 2010, The Penang Bookshelf is the leading seller of rare and antiquarian books, especially on Malaysia and Southeast Asia. William is also the current president of the Independent Online Booksellers Association. He conducts regular consultancy sessions in Gerakbudaya Bookshop every Sunday and by appointment.
