Tan Sooi Beng

 

Tan Sooi Beng is a professor in the School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia and is one of the leading authorities on the performing arts in Southeast Asia. Her publications include Bangsawan: A Social and Stylistic History of Popular Malay Opera (1993), The Music of Malaysia: The Classical, Folk and Syncretic Traditions (2017), Bangsawan Malaysia: Staging Cultural Diversity and Change (2011), The Multicultural Performing Arts, Crafts, Festivals and Food of Penang (2011), Muzik Malaysia, Tradisi Klasik, Rakyat dan Sinkretik (2012, with Patricia Matusky), and Eclectic Cultures for All: The Development of the Peranakan Performing, Visual and Material Arts in Penang (2019). She lives in Penang.
